Capt. Axel Caden:
Once upon a yester-year, a lad was born to a Man and His Companion.
Said lad grew in the love of His parents and their firm hand of discipline, until such time that He was apprenticed to a Slaver. Keeping in mind that this is Gor, and the caste system is well in effect, you can cant guess who the Slaver was...well then read more.
Unfortunately a Merchant took a great disliking to the Slaver, over the refusal to sell a certain set of slaves. Said Merchant hired sell-swords to discuss the issue with the Slaver, with predictable results.
The poor lad found Himself alone in the world. Since no handy circuses were around to be run off to and joined, the Lad took to the sea. There He grew up among the Men of the Thassa and learned their Trade.
Years passed, the Lad became a captain in His own right and set off for adventure and profit by way of Merchanting Himself. His success varied from poor to great as He plied His trade of moving and selling dry goods and livestock. The tri-cornered hat and thick wooden beads woven in His hair became His trade mark, as did the easy grin and laugh that was always ready to burst free.
Alas, yet again the carefree (as least as much as a sea-faring life can be) was ground to a halt by the previously mentioned evil Merchant. Though more than a few attempts through the Merchants Guild to discredit the Man, and a few unexplained guest appearances by "wavers of sharp pointy objects" failed in their attempts to dissuade His use of breathing, the Man bore the evil Merchant no ill will.
In fact, the Man was so altruistic that He even saved the crews and goods of more than a few ships that the evil Merchant used, when the Man found said ships sinking on the Thassa. The evil Merchant used the Man's good nature against Him and brought charges most vile against the Man. Piracy was declared before the Merchants Guild!
The evil Merchant was well prepared this time. With bribed "witnesses" and false accounts of the Man's many rescues of crew and goods, the evil Merchant tarnished the poor, yet good hearted Man's reputation. The poor Man had to flee for His life from Guild and Guard out to sea.
Without Guild authorization, the Man and His crew drifted back and forth from small ports, eking out what they could until the Man had an apostrophe! (Lighting struck His brain...or at least that's what the faux British accent says) If the Guild would side with the evil Merchant against honest Men, then He would start His own Guild! A Man from earth, He'd once spoke with discussed a nonsensical topic of Free Enterprise. In that instant, it made sense, and Gor's first Free Enterprise Merchant was born!
Captain Axel Caden plied His trade again. Free, mostly, of tariffs and impositions of the Merchants Guild, He was able to transfer goods of all manner across the Thassa. True Freedom for Himself and His men.
In the interim time since that moment of apostrophe, Axel has traveled on land and sea, and through the air. He has found two places that He can call Home, though truthfully he keeps His Homestone in His boot. That way, everywhere is Home. The hot sands of the Tahari, the sea of dunes found Him calling Tor Home for a time. Once even being it's Ubar. Among the mead and bondsmaids of Torvaldsland did Axel find the second place to call Home.
For now, Axel's ship is docked at Kassau, and the Serpent's Temptation Inn is His present Home. It's Proprietress is an old friend of His. There Axel can be found seated on His patchwork furs, a mug of something in His hand and a ready grin and laugh for visitors and fellow Occupants.
